The data for the latest trends in the Pet Industry shows it is recession proof! Yes, the pet industry is a “billion” dollar business. According to Forrester Research, by 2012 US Online Retail Sales will reach $229 billion.

In 2011-2012 a study conducted by the American Pet Products Association (APPA) found that “62% of U.S. households own a pet, which equates to 72.9 million homes”. To take their findings a bit further, they included a breakdown which revealed that in 2011 the Number of U.S. Households that Own a Pet was as follows: .
Bird 5.7 million
Cat 38.9 million
Dog 46.3 million
Equine 2.4 million
Freshwater Fish 11.9 million
Saltwater Fish 0.7 million
Reptile 4.6 million
Small Animal 5.0 million

By this many households owning this amount of pets resulted in $50.84 billion in sales for the pet industry according to APPA; of this $19.53 billion was spent on food and $11.4 billion was spent on supplies.
